FAQs: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. What is the IILEX Course?
It is a Course that runs part-time called the Diploma in Legal Studies & Practice in conjunction with the Irish Institute of Legal Executives & provides those engaged in para-legal, legal executive or legal secretarial work with academic & vocational training in para-legal studies, and a recognised professional qualification. It is also currently subject to HETAC validation as a Special Purpose Award at Level 7.
2. Who can do it?
Students must meet the standard entry requirements for HETAC level 7 programmes (min. of 5 ordinary level D3s in the Leaving Certificate).
Mature learners: Students over 23 years of age on the 1st of January on the year of admission may apply as a mature student. Mature students are assessed on the basis of age & work experience and may be interviewed in advance of admission.
3. Do you need to have any legal background to do the course?
Although many people that do apply tend to work within a solicitors office it is open to all.
4. Is it possible to be exempt from any of the modules of the course or exempt from stage one of the courses?
It is possible but you need to send in a copy of your qualifications, along with the syllabus of your course and to fill out the application form. Once we receive this information we will look into enabling the exemptions for you and call you back when complete.
5. What does the course focus on?
The course focuses on traditional core legal subjects as well as the practical application of legal principles in the work environment. The study of legal practice and procedure is undertaken specifically with the role, duties and responsibilities of the Legal Executive in mind.
6. What is the time scale, fees, schedule etc?
The course is taught over one year, however a two-year option is also available. The course runs from October to May, three evenings per week, from 6 until 10pm. The fees are €4380 per year or €365 per module.
7. Can this course be done on a full time scale?
You need to contact the Course Director if interested in full-time study.
8. What are my options once I complete this course?
You can go straight into employment. If you have already worked in a solicitor's office for 5+years you can sit the FE1s exams for entry to the Law Society of Ireland to train as a Solicitor. You may also progress to further study, for example, the LLB in Irish Law at Griffith College.
9. I want to follow a legal executive course but there seems to be so many to choose from . What advice would IILEX offer me?
Not all courses that mention legal executive are what they appear to be. IILEX itself cannot keep abreast of the apparently frequent tinkerings with courses and course titles and content. This was one of the reasons why IILEX helped devise the IILEX-accredited course with our partners, Griffith College, and this is one course that we can recommend and stand over 100%. Educational courses are not cheap and proper care should be taken by students before they part with hard-earned money. Investigate the authenticity, accreditation and content of any course before buying.
10. What if I get my qualification in Ireland and then move to the UK?
If you are thinking of moving from the UK to Ireland or vice versa and are unsure of how your qualifications will be affected then please visit: www.qualifications-across-boundaries.org/compare/uk_ireland which offers comparisons between UK and Irish levels on the National Qualification Grids, as well as a profile of the knowledge / competencies / skills associated with / expected of each level.
